I bought the ATI/AMD HD Radeon 7970 last month.
Drumdevil gets a Geforce GTX 670 tomorrow. (

Those 2 cards are the highest you can go at the moment.

Yeah, basically Nvidia GeForce and AMD Radeon are the best two cards right now, and they are pretty much the same. Nvidia has all that Optimus stuff they advertise, although I believe that's only for laptops (might save a bit of power on a desktop). Either way, I'm personally an AMD Radeon fan myself, although Nvidia is definitely also great. (If you're on a laptop, it seems AMD Radeon Mobility cards totally suck... would recommend a GeForce on laptops)

This is my first ATI/AMD card in a couple of years now (last one was when the 7900 pro was the fastest around) and i must say... it doesnt make big of a difference.
If you like PhysX enabled games go with nvidia they have a monopoly on that. Though i don't notice any difference from nvidia cards.

basicly... how much money do you want to spend?
GeForce GTX 680 is $500 and is about the best card out there. Lower cost 6 series are due out later this year.
Radeon HD 7850 OC $270 is probably a better choice, not far behind a GTX 570. No need to get the OC edition really, its nothing that couldnt be done manualy to a stock 7850 but it's only $10 more.
Any day down, NVidia will lauch the GTX 660, and that will probably be a rocking card at a good price. I suggest you look into that card if you want an upgrade.

I would go for a 570/560 (Ti)
A high-end GPU which isn't very costly and gives great performance. The GTX 690 is the best out there now.

I ended up getting the GeForce 550 which is cheaper and a huge leap from my old GPU. I'm not too fussy about amazing grahpics aslong as it can play games. However my old one could not even handle running the most basic of games at time.
So Yay
